6 layer pcb stackup: plan the return path first

Request a project review

A six-layer board has six conductive copper layers, but there is no universal assignment that fits every design. Choose a construction around the signals, return paths, power distribution and mechanical constraints of your product.

Start with the electrical intent

List the interfaces that need controlled impedance, their reference planes and the routing layers they are expected to use. A signal should have a continuous reference path. Crossing a split or changing layers without considering the return current can undermine the benefit of adding layers.

Separate examples from production stackups

An arrangement such as Signal / Ground / Signal / Power / Ground / Signal is a discussion starting point, not a universal recommendation. The relationship between each signal layer and adjacent planes matters, as do plane connectivity and the actual dielectric spacing. Review the trade-offs for your interfaces before selecting an arrangement.

Confirm the dielectric construction

The total finished thickness does not tell you the spacing between a signal trace and its reference plane. Ask for available core and prepreg combinations, pressed thicknesses and copper assumptions. These details are needed to establish controlled trace dimensions.

Request a stackup review before freezing your routing rules.
