6 layer pcb controlled impedance requirements
Request a project reviewControlled impedance starts with a defined transmission-line structure. Layer count alone cannot determine a trace width or guarantee interface performance.
Define each net class
State the target impedance, allowed tolerance, signal layer and reference layers. Distinguish single-ended and differential structures. Record any differential spacing, coupling or routing constraints required by the interface design.
Agree the construction before routing
Dielectric thickness and properties, conductor width and thickness, solder-mask effects and neighboring copper can influence the result. Use the actual fabrication construction in the calculation. A generic online example is not a release rule.
Review transitions
Vias, layer changes and reference-plane discontinuities introduce behavior that a uniform trace calculation does not describe. Check return-current paths, connector transitions and any residual stubs as part of interface design validation.
Send impedance targets with your stackup and fabrication notes.
Specify verification
Agree test coupons, measurement method and reporting before placing an order. A coupon report demonstrates a defined test condition; it does not on its own validate the complete signal channel. Keep the acceptance requirement consistent across drawings and purchasing documents.
