6 layer pcb materials: match the construction to the application

Request a project review

Material selection is an engineering decision, not simply a choice between standard and premium. Match the laminate and prepreg system to electrical behavior, assembly temperature, mechanical loading and sourcing needs.

Understand the properties

Glass transition temperature, decomposition behavior and thermal expansion describe different aspects of a laminate. Tg alone is not an operating-temperature rating. Use the supplier data sheet and relevant test conditions to compare properties.

Electrical requirements

Dielectric constant and loss values depend on test method, frequency and construction. Avoid assigning one generic FR-4 number to every controlled interface. For high-speed or high-frequency work, use design values agreed with the material supplier and fabricator.

Core and prepreg availability

Available thicknesses and glass styles constrain the stackup. A material substitution can change electrical and manufacturing behavior, even when the advertised Tg is similar. List substitutions that require design approval.

Include your preferred material and substitution rules in the inquiry.

Copper and mechanical design

Copper thickness affects conductor dimensions, etching considerations and the finished stackup. Also consider board stiffness, connector fit, mounting stress and thermal cycling. Confirm the final construction together with the layer stack.
